Greetings Students and Families,

During the 2020-21 college application cycle, many students were confused and also thrilled to hear that record numbers of colleges and universities had adopted a Test Optional Policy.  My blog to understand this policy on this topic can be read here

The ongoing pandemic has certainly had a huge impact on educational planning with hybrid/online learning, truncated extracurriculars and changes to the college entrance exam testing industry.  During spring 2020 – the AP exam format changed drastically and we have some changes this spring as well – I’ll be discussing those in my next blog.

Juniors—class of 2022 also know as I discussed in my recent blog that SAT formats have changed and SAT II Subject tests were eliminated.  You can read about all these changes in my earlier blogs as well as learn about the testing requirements.   .

With the changes in the recent college application cycle,  many colleges and universities  are extending their test-optional policies into the 2021-22 admissions cycle (and perhaps permanently.

Given the limitations on both the ACT and SAT in 2020, both the College Board and ACT decided against changes that had been under discussion to implement at-home testing.  As a result, many colleges and universities have announced they will again suspend the requirement for SAT or ACT during  the admissions cycle and Common App 2021-22.

Thus far, Harvard, Cornell and Columbia within the Ivy League have informed potential applications that their extending their test-optional policies will be extended to the 2021-22 admissions cycle. This means that current juniors planning to apply to those schools will NOT be required to submit SAT or ACT scores as part of their undergraduate applications.

Although students will not be reviewed unfavorably for having SAT or ACT scores submitted with their applications, as I noted in my blog, many colleges made it clear that they value these scores and continued to encourage students to if available.  Many colleges are also flexible in that AP scores became an acceptable submission over the SAT/ACT.

As juniors ’22 work this spring to shape their short-list of best fit universities- reach, match and safety – you may want to know whether test optional policies will be extended.  Here’s a current list.  Please check the Admissions Requirements carefully as this is a fluid and evolving decision for many universities.

As I also noted, with the absence of SATII subject tests—selective colleges and many STEM programs that traditionally required these exams will likely consider your AP scores carefully- so please step up your preparation time the next 6 to 8 weeks on your AP exams this May.

A list of colleges adopting or extending test optional policies is at the bottom of this page. Again, please check for updates so you are well informed.
